My point is, these top names that used the Oak kits never stick with them. They use them once or twice so that the audience (fellow drummers) are sold on them... Weckl, Cobham, Carlock ETC!
Very cool idea to use Oak for drums though, I must agree.
Spent the day at Yamaha one time and played all the drums they make. I liked the combo of Birch Toms with a Maple kick, or all Maple. The Oaks drums are definetly LOUD. True... Dave has a Oak kit, but I think his favorite kit for live work is his Maple, and Birch for recording.

I tried out an Oak kit with factory heads at GC a while back. I tried tuning them several ways but I couldn't get a pleasing sound out of them. Too resonant to my ear. Maybe they'd sound more musical in a very large venue or outdoors.
The Maple Definitive are not made for US sales.
I wonder if this is really representitive of the sound that could be acheived....this fella plays nicely...I've not heard of him

Funny, I just bought a set of Oak Customs and they are great. Great kick, especially. As a matter of fact, I bought them the day before a huge outside gig and every drummer at the store I bought it at came out to hear them. (Don't ask me why), but I found out later who was there and every drummer said they sounded absolutely amazing. Every gig since then, every soundman said they sound fantastic and I got them for a great price, too. My favorites are birch, these are second in line for me.
